What is an IBCLC?
An IBCLC holds the highest regarded professional qualification in specialised breastfeeding knowledge which supports, protects and promotes breastfeeding.
IBCLCs are knowledgeable in all areas of lactation and provide evidence based information to support both basic and complex breastfeeding challenges. IBCLCs are regulated by The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and are required to re-certify every 5 years and work within a code of professional conduct.
My Qualifications and Experience
My interest in breastfeeding started some time ago as a paediatric nurse (RSCN) and further developed as a midwife (RMW) and health visitor (RHV).
I saw very clearly what a real difference the right support and breastfeeding knowledge made, particularly when there is so much conflicting advice and information out there.
Inspired by a colleague who had trained as an IBCLC , I began my training in 2015 and truly loved the experience. The theoretical and practical training involved allowed me to develop an extensive set of skills and knowledge, allowing me to follow my passion of supporting women as they transition confidently to motherhood. Since qualifying I have worked as a specialist breastfeeding health visitor and Infant feeding lead. I worked at King’s College Hospital in the Tongue Tie Clinic for 5 and a half years.
Outside of private practice, I volunteer at 2 community based support groups in South East London.
I have 2 awesome grown up children who I am so grateful to, for teaching me so much. In my spare time I enjoy walking our dog, yoga, running, family holidays and socialising with friends.
“Sue visited me at my home when my little boy was two weeks old. As soon as I met her I knew she could help me, she was so calm and reassuring right from the start. My little one had tongue tie which meant he wasn’t latching correctly which resulted in incredibly painful feeding. Sue spent time with me looking at my baby’s positioning whilst feeding and his latch.
All I can say is if I hadn’t have met Sue I don’t think I would still be feeding him three months later. The support from Sue continued after we had met – I messaged her on numerous occasions with lots of breastfeeding questions and she always replied so quickly with advice and kind words which reassured me instantly!
My breastfeeding journey with my previous children unfortunately was shorter than I had planned but I can honestly say meeting Sue and having her at the end of the phone for reassurance has got me to where I am now and hopefully our breastfeeding journey will continue for many more months.”
